Benefits of an anti-nausea treatment for cancer patients

In Medications News

Control of chemotherapy-induced nausea, once an elusive prospect, is increasingly successful with the use of an approved drug commonly used by psychiatrists, according to conclusive findings in a new study by Rudy Navari, M.D., Ph.D, F.A.C.P., assistant dean and director of the Indiana University School of Medicine-South Bend and clinical director of the Harper Cancer Research Institute.

Lupus And Antibiotics

In Question & Answers , tagged

Question:

I have SLE - diagnosed two years ago and am currently not working. Muscle pain, fatigue, bruising, hair loss, diffuculty concentrating, and an high ANA - 2835 - are some of the ongoing symtoms. On several occasions I have taken antibiotics for other infections and felt my lupus symtoms disappear. I wonder if the antibiotics are "aiding" my over reactive immune system and allowing the immune system to "rest" during these periods, thus causing decreased lupus symtoms. Any research being done in this area?

Taking Ortho Tri Cyclen For Birth Control And Also For Helping With Acne While Using Doryx

In Medications Question & Answers , tagged ; ; ;

Question:

    Hi. I began taking Ortho Tri Cyclen two days ago for birth control, and also for what I hear it helps acne. I was seeing a dermatologist before I went to the gyno, and he gave me an antibiotic called Doryx for my acne. I read that while taking Doryx, the pill could be less effective. I also read online that I could take both but it would take some time for the pill to be effective and for the Doryx not to conflict. I first considered giving up the Doryx to go on the pill to see if my acne was hormonal, but I`m already going on month two of Doryx. I don`t want to get pregnant either! So how long does it take for the pill and the Doryx to NOT conflict with each other so I won`t have to use condoms in order to avoid pregnancy? Or will they always conflict?

Biaxin XL Question

In Medications Question & Answers

Question:

    I had bronchitis in March and was given Biaxin XL. That worked well to clear up the bronchitis. I got it again in May and my doctor gave me amoxicillin. That didn`t work at all and I still have the bronchitis. This week he gave me Biaxin again. My cough and chest pains are not as bad so the Biaxin is working again. What is the difference between the two antibiotics? Why didn`t the amoxacillin work?

Understanding Medications & Medical Interventions

The birth of a child who has a disability is a difficult and stressful time for a family. It is a time when parents must grieve the loss of the "perfect" baby that they had anticipated and deal with the medical and emotional complexities of the situation (Batshaw, 1991).

When the infant is finally discharged home from the hospital, the parents are generally overwhelmed with the "special care" that their baby needs. Besides feeding and infant care, medications, treatments and special equipment become part of the daily routine. Parents must learn to cope with their dependency on medical and paraprofessional personnel for advice and intervention.

A New Antibiotic For Cattle: New Responsibilities For Producers

In New Medicines , tagged ; ; ;

UCD VET VIEWS
CALIFORNIA CATTLEMAN, OCTOBER 1998

This month, a new antibiotic for the treatment of respiratory disease in cattle is scheduled for release. This antibiotic is a member of a new class of antibiotics: fluoroquinolones. A previous column about fluoroquinolone antibiotics was written in this publication back in 1996 (February 1996; Fluoroquinolone antibiotic use in cattle). There has been a fair amount of controversy about this class of antibiotics in human medicine and veterinary medicine circles. The controversy revolves around the concern that bacterial resistance to the fluoroquinolones will develop and result in the emergence of "Super Bugs". These bacteria would then be resistant to the fluoroquinolones. These bacteria could infect humans, and no effective therapy would be available. Those concerned postulate that using these antibiotics in food animals, such as cattle, would accelerate the potential of developing bacterial resistance. While this concern has theoretical potential, the practical potential is extremely small or non-existent. This class of antibiotics is used routinely in human patients and in companion animal patients (including horses). These humans and animals are in much closer contact with other humans than the products of food animals. While the scientific merit of these concerns is questionable, the effects of this controversy will clearly affect the use of this antibiotic in cattle.
